From The Sunflower Seed comes this Christmas ornament with a
spider hanging from pine branches to commemorate the folk
legend from German and the Ukraine about spiders being
banished from homes on Christmas Eve when the woman of the
house cleaned and broke their webs, and how they snuck out of
their hiding places after everyone whent to bed. When they went
to see the decorated tree weaving, they were so excitied and
wove webs throughout. When the Christ child visited at midnight
to bless the house he saw their wonderful work as they are a
creatures made by God, so he touched their webs and made
them into sparkling silver and gold colors to give the tree a more
beautiful look and not to dismay the woman who cleaned the
house awaiting his visit.
