Formerly known as Death Valley Ranch, Scotty's Castle stands as a monument to an unlikely friendship between Albert Johnson, a Chicago businessman, and prospector Walter Scott. Having given Scott money to invest in a mine, Johnson decided to visit Death Valley in 1905 to check on his holdings. His health was improved by the climate, and he decided to build the structures now known as Scotty's Castle as a vacation home. However, like so many other dreams, the 1929 stock market crash kept his dream from becoming a reality.
