The 33-star U. S. Flag flew at Fort Sumter during the opening battle of the Civil War. The stars represented even those states that had seceded from the Union. The Stars and Bars was the first national flag of the Confederate States of America. Its seven stars represented the seven states that had seceded by March, 1861, when the flag was adopted. The Palmetto Flag was adopted as the official state flag for South Carolina on January 26, 1861. The palmetto tree commemorated the role of Fort Moultrie in the first major naval defeat of the British in the American Revolution.
