Established in 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park covers more than 415 square miles of Colorado high country and protects some of America's most magnificent mountain scenery, along with a variety of plant and animal life. Ponderosa and lodge pole pine, juniper, Douglas fir, and blue spruce can be found in abundance, along with occasional groves of aspen and meadows punctuated by wildflowers. At higher elevations, the trees disappear, giving way to alpine tundra and trademark mountain skylines.
